The Rough Fork Trail winds gently through a quiet Smoky Mountain valley, where history lingers in weathered schoolhouses and abandoned churches hidden along the path. In late October, the air is crisp, the forest draped in autumn color, and if we’re lucky, elk may wander through the meadows. With its soft elevation and peaceful pace, this hike blends natural beauty with a touch of eerie Appalachian lore.

◊ Fees: No park entrance fee. Parking tag required for vehicles parked more than 15 minutes ($5/day) On the way in, we’ll stop at the Cataloochee Overlook where you can pay for and display your ticket.

* Trail conditions may be variable. Expect uneven surfaces, and the possibility of downed branches or muddy sections, can be slick if damp.
* Cell service is spotty. Download maps ahead of time.
* Wildlife & history etiquette: Keep voices low near the cemetery and homesteads; don’t touch artifacts. Give elk LOTS of space, especially during rut. &#x20;
