This Sunday we're mixing trail miles with a little Texas history and one of the most beautiful spots in Austin.

We'll caravan down to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, hit a stretch of the Violet Crown Trail for roughly three miles, then loop back and spend some time walking through the Wildflower Center itself before heading back to Buzz Mill for bagels, tacos, and a hang.

The Wildflower Center was founded in 1982 by Lady Bird Johnson and actress Helen Hayes with the goal of protecting and preserving native Texas plants and landscapes. Lady Bird famously believed that native plants and natural beauty weren't luxuries. They were part of what gave places identity and soul. Today the center is one of the most important native plant conservation spaces in the country and showcases hundreds of species of Texas wildflowers, grasses, and Hill Country ecosystems.

And then there's the name "Violet Crown."

For years, Austin has carried the nickname "The City of the Violet Crown," a phrase dating back to the early 1900s describing the purplish glow that settled over the hills at sunset. Some said it came from cedar pollen and dust in the air, others from the way evening light hit the Hill Country haze. Either way, the name stuck.

So this Sunday we lean into all of it:
