PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. THIS IS A LEGAL DOCUMENT.
By signing this waiver or registering for participation, I acknowledge and agree to the following:
1. Acknowledgment of Risk
I fully understand that ocean swimming is an inherently dangerous activity. I voluntarily assume all risks associated with my participation in these swims, including but not limited to:
Drowning or near-drowning
Strong currents, waves, rip tides, and shifting tides
Marine life (jellyfish, stingrays, sharks, etc.)
Sudden changes in weather or water temperature
Hypothermia, dehydration, and exhaustion
Visibility issues (fog, swell, glare)
Collisions with other swimmers, surfers, watercraft, or fixed objects
Delayed or limited emergency response in an open-water environment
I understand that these swims are not sanctioned races, that no lifeguard supervision is guaranteed, and that participation is voluntary and at my own risk.
2. Waiver and Release of Liability
In consideration for being allowed to participate in South Bay Squad ocean swim activities, I hereby release and hold harmless:
South Bay Squad, South Bay Squad Community, its coaches, organizers, board members, sponsors, and volunteers
The City of Redondo Beach, its departments, officials, and employees
Any other affiliated individuals or entities
...from any and all claims, demands, liabilities, losses, damages, costs, or expenses (including attorneys’ fees) that may arise from my participation in these events — including those caused by negligence, but excluding gross negligence or willful misconduct.
3. Personal Responsibility
I certify that I am a competent swimmer and in adequate physical condition to safely participate in open-water ocean swims. I agree to:
Swim at my own pace and risk
Remain aware of my surroundings and conditions
Use a brightly colored swim cap and swim buoy for visibility
Inform a coach or fellow swimmer of any medical conditions or concerns
Swim with a buddy or group when possible
Exit the water immediately if I feel unsafe or unwell
Follow all guidance provided by SBS coaches or event organizers
4. No Guarantee of Safety
I understand that these are informal, community-led swim sessions with no guaranteed safety infrastructure, no closed course, and no lifeguards specific to the event. I accept full responsibility for my own actions and safety.
5. Emergency Medical Treatment
In the event of injury or illness, I authorize South Bay Squad or its volunteers to seek emergency medical care on my behalf and release them from any liability arising from such actions.
6. Photography & Media Release
I grant South Bay Squad the right to use any photos, videos, or recordings of me taken during these swims for marketing, education, or promotional purposes, without compensation.
7. Acknowledgment of Understanding
I have carefully read and understand this waiver and release of liability. I acknowledge that I am voluntarily giving up substantial legal rights by signing it.
