Hosted by 11th Annual Rockaway Ride
The Rockaway Ride is Outsiders' flagship summer tradition: a 20-mile journey from downtown Manhattan to the shores of Rockaway Beach. You'll cross the Brooklyn Bridge, wind through some of New York's most iconic and under-explored neighborhoods, and make a pit stop in Red Hook before pushing all the way out to Queens. And when you roll up to the beach, the real party begins. **THE RIDE** This isn't a race. No spandex required, no carbon fiber in sight. Think jean shorts, commuter bikes, and good company. We roll at a social pace, which means plenty of time to take in the city, chat with the group, and actually enjoy the journey. The whole thing takes about 3 hours, and every mile is worth it. Starting at Unlimited Biking on Chambers St, you'll cross the **Brooklyn Bridge** and make your way to **Red Hook** for a stop at the legendary **Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pie**. Pick up a slice from **Steve's Key Lime Pie**, a neighborhood institution and one of the best bites in all of New York. Don't skip it. **THE BEACH** This is where the afternoon takes off. Once you hit the sand, the ride is done and the party is on. We'll be posted up at Rockaway Beach 86 for the rest of the afternoon: swimming in the waves, playing beach volleyball, and soaking up the sun with good music going all day. Grab food and drinks at **Ripper's**, one of the best beach bars in the city, right on the boardwalk. Hosted by Nature Walk & Meditative Persian Tea Ceremony with House Leyli
Some rituals slow time down. This is one of them. On September 20, Outsiders partners with House of Leyli for a morning rooted in two of the oldest forms of restoration: moving through nature and sharing tea. Together, they make for something rare in a city that rarely pauses. We'll start on the trail, walking at a pace that invites presence over pace. Eyes up. Breath steady. The kind of movement that clears your head before you've even realized it needed clearing. Afterward, we'll settle in for a meditative tea ceremony led by House of Leyli, a lifestyle brand that cultivates modern mindfulness rituals rooted in Persian culture. Founded by Hediya, whose earliest memories are of three generations of women gathered at a kitchen table, sharing tea steeped with cardamom, rose, and saffron, House of Leyli carries that tradition forward with intention. Expect loose-leaf Persian tea, poetry, meditation prompts, and the kind of conversation that only comes when everyone finally slows down. Getting Started
Signing up for outdoor activities in New York is often straightforward, with many groups utilizing platforms like Sweatpals or local park conservancy websites. For organized events, you might register online in advance, while many casual meetups simply require showing up at a designated time and place. Your first session will typically involve a brief introduction from the organizer, a warm-up, and then the activity itself, whether it's a brisk walk, a group run, or a yoga flow. Etiquette is generally relaxed, but always be mindful of shared spaces, especially on crowded paths; keep to the right and announce when passing. Costs vary significantly; many park-led fitness classes and group runs are entirely free, supported by conservancies or local volunteers. However, specialized activities like kayaking rentals at Pier 26 or guided bike tours will have associated fees. Always check the event description for specific details on registration and costs.
How to Choose the Right Outdoor Activitie
Selecting the perfect outdoor activity group or event in New York involves considering several factors to match your preferences. First, think about the activity type: are you looking for a brisk run, a leisurely walk, an invigorating yoga session, or something more adventurous like kayaking? Next, consider the pace and distance; some running clubs cater to marathon trainers, while others are perfect for casual joggers. Check the schedule to ensure it fits your availability, as some groups meet exclusively on weekday mornings, others on weekend afternoons. Location is key; choose an area convenient to your home or work, whether it's the West Side Highway for cycling or Fort Greene Park for boot camp. Decide if you prefer a social, chatty group or a more competitive, focused atmosphere. Don't hesitate to ask hosts questions about their typical group size, the route they take, or what to bring. Many groups allow you to try a session before committing, so you can gauge the vibe and determine if it's the right fit for your New York outdoor adventure.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the typical cost for outdoor activities in New York City?
Many outdoor activities in New York are free, such as joining community running groups that meet in Central Park or utilizing public parks for walking and cycling. Some organized fitness classes, like those offered by local studios in Madison Square Park, might cost $15-$30 per session, while equipment rentals for kayaking or biking can range from $20-$60 for a few hours.
Are outdoor activities in New York suitable for all skill levels?
Absolutely. New York offers a wide spectrum of outdoor activities catering to every skill level. You can find gentle walking tours of the High Line, beginner-friendly yoga classes in Prospect Park, or challenging cycling routes around Governors Island. Many groups specifically state their pace or intensity, making it easy to find a suitable fit.
What are the best times of day or week to participate in outdoor activities?
Mornings, especially before 9 AM, are excellent for avoiding crowds in popular spots like the Central Park Loop or Brooklyn Bridge Park. Evenings, particularly during sunset, offer stunning views along the waterfronts. Weekends see increased participation, with many organized events and community gatherings, but also more foot traffic in popular areas. Weekday lunch breaks can be great for quick park visits.
How should I handle parking and public transit for outdoor activities?
Public transportation is highly recommended when heading to outdoor activities in New York. Most major parks and waterfronts are easily accessible via subway or bus. Parking can be extremely challenging and expensive, especially near popular destinations like Central Park or the West Side Highway. Plan your route using MTA subways and buses for a stress-free experience.
What should I wear for outdoor activities in New York's changing weather?
Layers are key for New York's variable climate. Even on a sunny day, temperatures can shift, especially near the water. Wear moisture-wicking athletic gear, and always have a light jacket or windbreaker. In colder months, thermal layers, hats, and gloves are essential, while summer calls for breathable fabrics and sun protection. Comfortable, supportive footwear is a must for any activity.
Are there good options for outdoor activities during the winter or extreme weather?
While some activities like kayaking are seasonal, many outdoor pursuits continue year-round. Ice skating rinks pop up in Bryant Park and Rockefeller Center during winter. Running and walking groups often brave the cold, and cross-country skiing is even possible in Central Park after heavy snowfall. For extreme heat or rain, many fitness studios offer indoor alternatives, but dedicated New Yorkers often embrace the elements with proper gear.
