The Breath-Hold Breathwork experience is a guided breathwork event that uses still breath holds (static apnea) to safely explore the edge between comfort and discomfort. Through controlled breath retention, participants engage the nervous system in a deliberate way - building presence, increased CO₂ tolerance, and the ability to remain calm and less emotionally reactive under pressure. During the event, you will learn how the body and mind respond to stress, including physiological stress responses and the mental patterns that arise as discomfort increases. The focus here is on capacity building, emotional regulation, stress tolerance, and developing a more conscious and skillful relationship with discomfort. This experience is adapted from freediving & yoga practices and suitable for divers & non-divers alike seeking a structured, embodied challenge grounded in physiology, awareness, and self-regulation. The skills practiced are highly transferable, supporting mindfulness and meditation, enhancing neuroplasticity through deliberate stress exposure, physical and mental challenge training, deep relaxation, and CO₂ tolerance development that can benefit sports performance, breath efficiency, and overall cardiovascular health. Benefits: Translatable benefits to multiple practices & aspects of life: Meditation & Mindfulness - Freediving & breath holding will directly help enhance meditative practices by fostering a higher level of self-awareness in your mind & body. Facing Fears & Controlling Stress - Holding your breath in a controlled environment pushes you to confront mental fears and the physical discomfort of rising CO2 levels. Overcoming Perceived Limitations - Static apnea challenges your mind's perception of limits to empower you to redefine what you thought was possible, helping you navigate real-life challenges with greater confidence. This Event Encompasses: - Classroom style learning on the physical and psychological adaptations that occur during breath holding - Guided and monitored breath-holds on land and in the pool - Instruction in breath preparation, mental strategies for CO₂ tolerance, and recovery techniques - Breath-holding safety protocols and partner monitoring - Group debriefs and integration Prerequisites: - Minimum Age: 15 - Clear medical self-assessment or doctor-signed medical statement - Willingness to participate responsibly and follow safety guidance **Freediving experience / certification is not required. During the hotter summer months (May-September), most outdoor activities shift indoors to air-conditioned studios or community centers. Indoor events are available year-round, offering flexibility regardless of the weather.

While Valley Metro Rail serves parts of Mesa, public transit options can be limited for destinations further afield, so checking specific event locations is recommended.
What should I wear to a wellness event in Mesa?
Comfortable, breathable clothing is always best. For outdoor events, especially during cooler months, layering is advisable as temperatures can change quickly from morning to midday. Don't forget a hat and sunscreen for daytime outdoor activities. For indoor events, typical activewear is sufficient, and some events might require socks or bare feet.
Are there indoor and outdoor wellness options throughout the year in Mesa?
Yes, Mesa offers a robust mix of both indoor and outdoor wellness experiences throughout the year. Outdoor events thrive in the pleasant fall, winter, and spring months, utilizing parks like Red Mountain Park and the scenic desert.
